The state fire marshal is investigating the scene of a fatal fire on Flynt Road on Tuesday afternoon, Jones County Fire Council spokeswoman Dana Bumgardner reported.

Michael Scruggs, 57, was pronounced dead at the scene after firefighter found his body inside the burned-up Winnebago, which was parked at 377 Flynt Road.

Calhoun volunteers responded to the call at 5:25 and found the RV engulfed in flames. After they extinguished the fire, they discovered the body inside, Bumgardner said.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Department and EMServ also responded.

County man killed in motorcycle crash

A Jones County man is dead after crashing the motorcycle he was riding into a car that was waiting to turn into Heritage Heights Baptist Church at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jones County Fire Council spokeswoman Dana Bumgardner reported.

Darren Richard, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene after being thrown from the motorcycle.

Witnesses told officials that the sportsbike was headed south and passing a vehicle when he crashed head-on with a Pontiac Aztec that was attempting to turn into the church driveway off Highway 15 North, just north of the Laurel city limits.

Richard lived on Trace Road. No other injuries were reported.

Volunteers from Shady Grove and Powers responded along with EMServ Ambulance, the Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Jones County Sheriff’s Department.
