Because of injuries, one of the top wide receiving prospects in the state will line up under center when Sumrall invades The Reservation to face South Jones in coach Roger Satcher’s first game as head coach for the Braves.

South Jones lost the bulk of both its offense and defense, but the Braves do return standout quarterback John Mitchell, who was one of the top performers in the Free State last season.

Mitchell threw for more than 1,800 yards and 23 touchdowns, but every player who caught a pass last season had graduated. Similarly, most of the running game has graduated too.

Mitchell led the team with 13 touchdowns and was second with 866 yards rushing. The second-leading returning rusher, Chad Locklear, had 30 yards on nine carries.

Jackson, an Ole Miss commit, in two seasons has caught 132 passes for 2,287 yards and 28 touch- downs for Sumrall. He attempted only one pass last season, completing it for 10 yards. He will supplant the injured Billy Garrity under center.
