West Jones took advantage of early turnovers, short fields and a stifling defense to defeat Northeast Jones 33-0 Friday night at The Shoe in Soso.
The victory lifts West Jones to 1-1 as it prepares for a Friday night matchup at Quitman, Northeast Jones fell to 0-2 on the season and were eliminated from the Battle for the Belt contention. The belt crowns a Jones County champion and was won last year by West Jones.
The Mustangs got a pair of rushing touchdowns from Micheal Neal and two Walker Thompson field goals to storm out to a 20-0 with 9 minutes, 16 seconds to play in the second quarter.
With about a minute to play in the half, West Jones’ Cedric Bender intercepted a Fifi Magee pass and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown and a 27-0 lead.
The Mustangs recovered a pooch kick, but a long field goal attempt as the clock ticked toward zero never materialized.
West Jones capped the scoring barrage with a Jasper Jones’ 9-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter before the Mustangs began to substitute liberally on both sides of the ball.
“We were really good on the defensive side of the ball and that puts a lot of pressure on their offense, any offense,” WJ coach Scott Pierson said.
Hancock 41, South Jones 34
Blake Comeaux scored four rushing touchdowns — including the game-winner — as Hancock defeated South Jones 41-34 in overtime Friday night on the Coast.
South Jones led 34-27 with three minutes to play in the game when Comeaux scored his third touchdown. His final tally came on the first possession of overtime.
On South Jones’ overtime possession, the Hawks intercepted a pass to seal the victory.
The loss drops South Jones to 0-2 on the young season, The Braves are scheduled to host West Harrison on Friday night on The Reservation.
